Innovation Management Watch Summary: “GenAI Innovation Soaring, With Patent Activity Nearly Tripling in Two Years” by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)

 Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is moving beyond experimentation and rapidly becoming a major field of protected technological innovation. New data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) shows that GenAI patent activity has accelerated dramatically, offering innovation leaders a valuable view of where organizations, industries and countries are positioning themselves for the next phase of AI development.

According to WIPO, published GenAI patent families increased from approximately 14,000 in 2023 to more than 37,800 in 2025. More than 56,000 GenAI patent families were published during 2024 and 2025 alone—more than the total published during the entire preceding decade from 2014 to 2023. GenAI also represented 8.7% of all AI-related patent family publications in 2025, compared with 6.1% in 2023 and 4.2% in 2017. 

The growth is not limited to traditional technology companies. Large enterprises operating in finance, telecommunications, infrastructure and digital services are increasingly protecting GenAI inventions. SoftBank emerged as the leading GenAI patent applicant, publishing nearly 3,000 patent families during 2024 and 2025. Tencent Holdings, Ping An Insurance Group and Baidu also ranked among the leaders, while Alphabet, Microsoft and IBM appeared in the global top ten. 

The geographic distribution of patent activity provides another indication of how quickly the competitive landscape is evolving. China remains the largest source of GenAI patent publications, with more than 43,000 patent families published by China-based inventors in 2024 and 2025. However, growth is accelerating elsewhere. Between 2023 and 2025, the United States recorded a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 92%, while Japan achieved a remarkable 210% CAGR and moved into third place globally. Germany became Europe’s leading GenAI inventor location, while Canada and Switzerland also recorded triple-digit growth.

For innovation leaders, these developments demonstrate that GenAI competition is increasingly about more than adopting existing tools. Organizations are developing proprietary capabilities, protecting intellectual property and positioning themselves within emerging AI ecosystems. Patent intelligence can therefore become an important component of innovation management, helping organizations identify emerging technologies, potential partners, competitive threats and areas of growing investment. 

WIPO Director General Daren Tang suggests that while GenAI’s initial impact has largely centered on content, its next frontier may be the innovation process itself. This represents an important shift for innovation management. As GenAI becomes embedded in research, product development and organizational innovation, leaders will need to consider not only how to deploy AI, but also how to identify, protect and strategically manage the intellectual property generated around it. 

The rapid rise in GenAI patent activity suggests that this transition is already well underway.
